smoking man

Ma'am, We Regret to Inform You...

Just to share what my friend always says whenever people advises him to quit smoking--

“Statistically, I have a higher chance of getting killed while driving to work than smoking.”

From pure math’s point of view, he is actually correct.

For males in his age group, fatal accidents are likelier.

“Of course," he continues before anyone can cut him off, “…we don’t go about with our lives looking at what the statistics table says.”

Moral of this story here is – smokers know what they are doing, and all the risks involved here.

But they do it anyway.

Because, like driving a fast car, it’s the adrenaline rush that they crave for. Not the nicotine.

The rush that comes with knowing that they might be able to get away and come out at the end alive -- to smoke and still stay healthy.

His wife, tired of hearing the same excuse, says, “Well, either way, if he dies, I’ll bury him.”

Author's notes - A string of emails at the workplace inspired this story.

I am a young man in my early thirties. A chemical engineer by training, but I like to say I am writer first before I became anything else. I began writing when I was fifteen. I come from Kuala Selangor, a quiet town by a river, full of sleepy sedentary government pensioners.
